EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy technique developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. It is primarily used to help individuals overcome the effects of traumatic experiences and alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR has also been found effective in treating various mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and phobias.

EMDR is based on the idea that the brain can often heal itself naturally, similar to how the body can heal physical wounds. However, in some cases, the brain might need assistance in processing distressing experiences. EMDR facilitates this process by combining elements of cognitive therapy with bilateral stimulation, typically using eye movements, auditory tones, or tactile sensations.

Typical length of sessions

EMDR therapy sessions usually are either 50 or 80 minutes minutes and may be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on the individual’s needs.
